Asd File

The ASD file extension is a data format associated to Microsoft Word. ASD files and Microsoft Word were developed by Microsoft. These files contain a snapshot. A file extension is the characters after the last dot in a file name. For example, in the file name 'winmail.dat', the file extension is 'dat'. It helps Windows select the right program to open the file. We help you open your file. We have a huge database of file extensions (file types) with detailed descriptions. In a previous post I discussed how to open a Word autorecover file with .asd extension with Word 2010, from comments in there arose a need to open ASD files in Word 2007.

I managed to open .ASD files in Word 2007 like this:

  1. Open Word 2007 and create a new document
  2. Click Word button -> Word Options -> Save
  3. See where your AutoRecover file location points to, mine was C:UsersusernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWord
  4. Copy paste the .asd file to that folder (if it already isn’t)
  5. Open the Open dialog, select “All files” on the bottom right corner and navigate to the folder you located in point 3.
  6. Select the .asd file, cross your fingers and click Open to open it.

It seems that Word only opens your .ASD from your AutoRecover file location, try to open it with Word from your Desktop and get the “cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type“.

I tested it many ways, including drag-drop into Word and it seems that Word doesn’t want to open the .ASD from your desktop, C: drive or elsewhere, only from your AutoRecover file location folder.

Alternative method to open ASD file:

1. Place a copy the .asd file into the unsaved files folder C:Users%username%AppDataLocalMicrosoftOfficeUnsavedFiles

.asdAsd File

2. Open Word and click on File – Recent

3. Looking down the bottom of the screen you see a button/box titled “Recover Unsaved Documents”

4. Click that button/box and open the .asd file you placed in the unsaved files folder in Step 1.

“On my system, Word application stopped responding all of a sudden. So, I immediately saved the document, which I was working and then closed the Word application. But the file is saved with .asd extension, instead of .doc. Also, if I try to open the file I get an error that states, “Microsoft Word cannot open this file because it is an unsupported file type.” What is this ASD file? How can I recover contents of my Word document? Someone kindly help me.”

What is ASD or .asd file?

Before you know about ASD file, have knowledge of AutoRecover feature provided in Microsoft Word program.

AutoRecover is an inbuilt option provided in Microsoft Office suite, which pull the plug on data loss due to unexpected interruptions like power surge, generation of errors, application halt/crash, abrupt system shut down etc that may prevent you from saving the Word file in a right way. Still, it is not an alternative for Save option. So, AutoRecover aspect aids in safeguarding a Word file during sudden disaster, only if the file is saved throughout the process as well at end.

If Word is terminated/interrupted in middle of process, then the current document will be saved in AutoRecover folder (if it was saved frequently, also at end); only when AutoRecover option is enabled. You can find AutoRecover folder under this path- C:UsersAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWord (Windows 7 and above) and C:UsersApplication DataMicrosoftWord (Windows 7 and below).

And Auto-Recovered file will be named as

  • AutoRecovery save of X.asd (X is name of opened file) in Win 7 and below
  • ~Wra####.asd (#### is random number given by Windows) in Win 7 and above

So, ASD is your rescued Word file. This file contains replica of currently opened Word document.
